PSHE Curriculum Statement

At Harefield Primary School, we deliver the statutory Relationships and Health Education (RHE) and British Values, through our PSHE curriculum.

Our PSHE curriculum’s intention is to support our pupils to develop and mature into healthy (physically and mentally), risk-aware, economically educated, sociable young people who can navigate the complexities of the modern world successfully and maintain positive healthy relationships. We will achieve this by ensuring practical safeguarding opportunities are planned into the PSHE curriculum, that British Values (democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law, and mutual respect and tolerance) and our pupils' Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development is thread through our entire curriculum and wider school life, and that key elements are specifically taught in PSHE lessons.

We tailor and put greater emphasis on particular themes, in response to current and relevant issues/ risks that are specific to our pupils and the local community/ area.

For example:

  • Peer influence – in response to the changes to KCSIE 2024 on child-on-child abuse and our pupils' needs.
  • Online risks – in response to an increase in younger pupils having mobile technology and accessing social media platforms that are not age appropriate.
  • Offline risks – in response to an increase in reports of criminal and sexual exploitation, domestic abuse and gang activity.
  • Diversity - in response to our pupils' needs, to encourage creativity, innovation, empathy, and social cohesion.

Our whole curriculum is comprehensibly planned and clearly sequenced and is effectively adapted and developed to meet the needs of ALL pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs and/ or Disabilities and those that are disadvantaged.

Our PSHE curriculum is taught by the class teacher, who will first revisit prior learning. We return to previous learning, in order for pupils to retrieve knowledge from their long-term memory and build on this, with the introduction of new knowledge. This is through an “I do, You do” approach of clear modelling and scaffolding of new concepts. The pupils will then practise applying this knowledge in a group or individual task. We also encourage and provide opportunities for pupils to reflect on their own and others' beliefs and experiences through investigating moral and ethical issues.

We use key CONCEPTS that are thread through our PSHE curriculum, from Yr R to Yr 6, in order to build on prior learning and support pupils making strong links in their knowledge from previous learning.
